Companies Office finds in Theatrelight's favour ALIA today received the following progress report from Theatrelight CEO, Rex Gilfillan, on the of the long-running legal wrangle between ALIA member Theatrelight and Chinese company Tai Lai. Zhuhai China, November 12th, Notice regarding "TAI LI LIGHTING" Theatrelight (a member of ALIA) is a New Zealand designer and manufacturer of entertainment lighting equipment established in 1972. Theatrelight has developed a number of products in which Theatrelight owns the copyright in software, trademark and physical design. In October 2002, following an investigation in New Zealand, Charlie Zheng, a director of Theatrelight, was dismissed from the board of directors of the company. Legal action is now underway in New Zealand to recover losses of NZ$3.5 million (about US2,000,000) from Charlie Zheng, which he defending. Subsequent to the discoveries in October 2002, Charlie Zheng's father, Zheng Daheng, the Chinese partner in Theatrelight's joint venture company Zhuhai Tai Li Theatrelight Ltd, seized sole control of the joint venture company without authorisation, cutting all links with Theatrelight in New Zealand. After a year of investigation, the Companies office in Zhuhai, China, has issued a written administrative penalty confirming that this was carried out by forging the signature of the Managing Director of Theatrelight, and forging Theatrelight's company seal on registration documents of the joint venture company. The official notice states that these forgeries were carried out by Zheng Daheng. This notice and further details of the dispute may be viewed in English and Chinese on Theatrelight's website www.theatrelight.co.nz. Unauthorised copies of Theatrelight designed products are now being offered for sale by a Chinese company "Tai Li Lighting", a Chinese registered company, in which the shareholders are Zheng Daheng (55%), and Charlie Zheng (45%). Some of these products appear with different branding and model names, labelled made by "Tai Li Lighting" but otherwise appear the same as Theatrelight's product designs. "Tai Li Lighting" has no permission to use Theatrelight's designs, which were developed in New Zealand by Theatrelight and which are subject to international copyright protection. No company in China has Theatrelight's authority to sell Theatrelight designed product anywhere in the world. Theatrelight will protect its rights in its designs. Any person who engages in trade in such unauthorised products will be subject to legal action. The original and genuine Theatrelight equipment is under full production in New Zealand. Theatrelight is the only company which can provide proper quality control, and it is the only source of technical backup and upgrades for Theatrelight designed equipment. Further details are available on Theatrelight's website www.theatrelight.co.nz or by contacting Theatrelight by email at info@theatrelight.co.nz in English or Chinese. |

Lighting launch ma-share net As most moving light operators have already experienced, fixtures sometimes hung and the profile in their lighting desk does not match perfectly. This can occur due to new fixtures or fixture software that has not yet been implemented by the desk manufacturer or maybe the fixture profile had to be written from spec sheets without the possibility to check with real life units. Since the start of the grandMA series MA Lighting has had the option of letting operators modify or even create new fixture profiles directly from the desk, but as there have been no real common place to share this, so operators across the world might have done the same work repeatedly for the same units. Now MA has taken the step to open the http://www.ma-share.net where users can benefit from each others effort perfecting their libraries and in the case the desired fixture is not found, create it themselves and then allow others to benefit from their work. http://www.ma-share.net is a rich source of files for the grandMA library, incl. gobos, effects, 3D-layouts, etc. From the beginning this site contains all existing fixtures from the grandMA library plus additions from MA Lighting distributors such as A.C.T and some others. Be inspired and upload what ever you have and also comment on existing fixtures if anything does not match. Still improve the use of grandMA and make your work and the work of others more comfortable. |

Shifts at Show Technology Show Technology, Australias leading importer and wholesaler of entertainment and architectural lighting, today made some key announcements. After more than 10 years of representation in both Australia and New Zealand, the company is relinquishing the Clay Paky agency and distributorship effective immediately. It has been a difficult decision for me says Show Technologys managing director Emmanuel Ziino. Our association with Clay Paky goes back a long way and our dedication to the company has been unwavering. However, the forces driving change in todays fast paced and competitive market, have made this decision for me. We wish Clay Paky all the best in the future and we would like to thank them for their support throughout the years Show Technology will continue to provide on going technical support to existing customers for as long as possible. Show Technology is moving closer to opening its purpose built Perth office and warehouse that will enable them to better service the Western Australian market. We hope to be operational by mid November at this stage," said Emmanuel Ziino. "The building works are progressing well. The Perth office will serve as a test bed and is part of our existing strategic focus of being closer to our customers and markets. We plan that in 2004 we will bring new offices in other parts of the country online as well." Show Technology has been busy providing product support for one of the worlds largest productions that is about to occur next week right here in Australia - the opening ceremony of the 2003 Rugby World Cup. With close to 400 intelligent fixtures from Martin and Studio Due, four MA Lignting grandMA consoles and a host of other products the gig is huge and truly exciting. These announcements come on the back of some impressive financial results for Show Technology in 2003. We have experienced good growth in a tough market for the financial year and our first quarter results for FY2004 have gone on to break new records, continued Emmanuel. We are launching more than 30 new innovative products by the end of this calendar year from our existing suppliers such as Martin, Studio Due, Kupo and Pulsar, while our other suppliers continue to produce excellent product that is in strong demand. Show Technology will be hosting a Martin trade day next Thursday October 9th at the companys headquarters in Silverwater. This will see the launch of the ground breaking new MACs from Martin - the MAC550 and MAC250 Entour. Special guests include representatives from Martin Denmark. We certainly are keeping busy! concluded Emmanuel. www.showtech.com.au |

goes to the Gold CoastRecently the Gold Coast Arts Centre decided it was time to replace its ETC Obsession II. Scott Allan, lighting manager, looked at what was available on the market and he was immediately interested in the MA Lighting grandMA console. "The flexibility offered to the user and the concept of setting up user profiles really attracted me," he said. "The fact that different operators could set up the desk to how they preferred it to work was a bonus." Two weeks after the grandma was delivered to the Arts Centre, Scott is very happy with the purchase. "The desk is excellent and very powerful," he stated. "It's an extremely user-friendly desk. If you want it to do 'XYZ' then you press 'XYZ' and it does it. That's what we need because we can't afford to spend huge amounts of time training people to use it." Currently deployed on the Arts Centre's production of 42nd Street, the grandMA is running the dimmers, 24 colour scrollers, some effects, Martin Atomic strobes and a starcloth running on five Martin Fibersource QFX150. "Setting those up in terms of preset groups is excellent and the layout you can achieve on the desk to call up the presets is also fantastic," added Scott. "With four permanent staff and eight casuals to be trained, this is an excellent desk." Scott was very impressed by the network that could be set up with the grandMA. "Not only do we have the grandMA but also two ELC network nodes in the building," he explained. "We have one of the nodes in the dimmer room, where most of the dimmers are kept, and the other on the OP fly floor where there are also dimmers. We also have a PC in the Technical Office, the Lighting Manager's Office, the Control Room of the other venue that we run, in the Dimmer Room and also on the fly floor. So, the 'network-ability' gives us total flexibility. You can log into any of the PC's to take control or you can do diagnostics from any of those locations on selected dimmers or fixtures. "We also have two wireless remotes, again for flexibility, and they work really well. My plan is to install a grandMA light into our other venue so we have both desks and rooms linked. It's a really good set up." The main theatre at the Gold Coast Arts Centre seats 1200 and has a stage measuring 12 metres by 13 metres. It hosts four inhouse musical productions every year as well as commercial touring shows and rock bands. Nearly every night of November and December is booked solid mainly with dance school shows. "It's quite a mission to light these shows night after night on the fly and I'm hoping that the grandma will make it a lot easier. Having everything at a touch of a button in front of you is excellent!" Theatre Productions take delivery of KryptonsWestern Australia has had its first delivery of the Martin Krypton with Corporate Theatre Productions purchasing four of the units. "We had to satisfy a growing need for us to identify and support sponsors in our events in new and creative ways," said Vaughan Emery, managing director of Corporate Theatre Productions. "As we work mainly in the business presentation sector, many of the events are driven by major sponsors and we're trying to move beyond the idea of using just banners to promote them. The great thing about the Krypton is that it has superior optics to most of the moving lights available and that translates to us as ability to very accurately project logos and identities onto walls, sets and other structures." Vaughan is amazed at how the Kryptons have quickly become a favourite in the hire department describing them as very busy! "They're very compact and at least 20% brighter than the MAC250 so it was a fairly straightforward choice," he added. "Regardless of venue, no two events are ever the same and the Krypton's brightness has the capacity to cut through a lot of problems. We don't have to worry about room lighting levels because we know we can cut through it. "I also have a lot of confidence in the support from show Technology." Corporate Theatre Productions has been in business for fourteen years and although they have always had an extensive lighting inventory, they have usually hired in moving lights. "With the Kryptons in stock life is a lot easier and we've already built up quite an amazing library of gobos," said Vaughan. "In addition to providing great gobo projection, the Krypton is also a useful moving light for all other lighting requirements." www.corporatetheatreproductions.com.au |

X gets Australia's first MAC250 KryptonsThe first of the new MAC250 Krypton moving lights to arrive in Australia were delivered in late July to Melbourne based hire and production company, Resolution X. Supplied directly from the first production run at Martin's factory in Denmark, these first fifty-two MAC250 Kryptons formed part of the more than 160 moving lights provided by Resolution X to television station HSV7 for the game show Deal or No Deal. The Krypton 250 which owes more of its design heritage to the MAC2000 line than the previous generation of MAC250's is proving much faster, brighter and more flexible than its predecessors. Tim Hall, of Resolution X is so impressed with the performance of the new 250 Krypton that he is considering buying more of them when they become available. draft of Test & Tag standard now under review The final draft of AS/NZS 3760:2003 (In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment) is out for committee review until August 15. This draft includes all of the corrections and amendments that were discussed at the recent Sydney meeting. These changes include: ** Definitions relating to hire, now clearly differentiate between a production hire and a dry hire. Production hires clearly do not fall under the Hire category for inspection, testing and tagging puposes. ** Test and inspection intervals relating to equipment offered for hire. This draft essentially states that equipment requires inspection before every hire, and testing at three monthly intervals. ** Clearly defining the responsibility for testing, inspection and tagging of hired equipment during the period of the hire, as passing to the hiree. The final release version of this standard should be approved by the end of August, with the printed standard available for purchase from Standards Australia www.standards.com.au and Standards New Zealand www.standards.co.nz shortly afterwards. |
GrandMA
comes to stay at Resolution XMelbourne-based hire and production company Resolution X has recently added a fully-expanded (4,096 channel) grandMA console to its hire inventory. The grandMA was selected by Resolution X to meet its growing need for an all-singing, all-dancing moving light console. In addition to being regularly specified by international tours, Resolution X are finding that an increasing number of local LD's including Paul Collison and Peter Lothian are also specifying a grandMA for their productions. In addition to grandMA's flexibility, power, and stability as a programming platform, Resolution X's Tim Hall is very pleased with how quickly and painlessly Hog and AVO programmers are able to pick-up operations on the console, and how simple it is proving to learn from scratch. One of the grandMA's first big jobs since arriving at Resolution X, has been at the studios of HSV 7 Melbourne, for Network Seven's latest game show "Deal or No Deal". On this production the grandMA is outputting five DMX streams to a multitude of Martin and Clay Paky moving lights. in addition to the studio dimmers. The console has been used in conjunction with a wireless PDA, a studio floor computer, and Resolution X's integrated Ethernet data network, to provide the producers with the flexible environment required for this complex and fast-paced production.
