Alfred Felton Hall Receives High Commendation
Walton Construction received a well-deserved pat on the back recently at the Australian Institute of Building’s annual ‘Professional Excellence in Building Awards.’ They received a High Commendation for their work in constructing Melbourne Grammar’s new performing arts centre, Alfred Felton Hall, located at the Caulfield campus.
Walton’s project manager David Burnell, graciously acknowledged all the sub-contractors who were involved in the project and invited them to share in the accolades.
The quality of the work undertaken can largely be contributed to the design by Peter Elliott Architects and Denis Irving of theatrical consultants Entertech, as well as Walton’s decision to utilise a team of specialists to work on the project. Working as part of this successful team, Lightmoves supplied luminaires, Circuit Tube, stage communication (including paging and intercom), equipment racks, a DMX console and DMX distribution to the now award-winning performing arts centre.
Lightmoves would like to congratulate Walton Construction, as well as all the other suppliers and sub-contractors who worked on this highly successful project.

On-line Community Formed to Support RDM Users and Developers
Scott Blair, chair of the committee that developed the Remote Device Management over DMX512 protocol, has announced the formation of a community for Developers implementing RDM.
The first step are the discussion forums (at www.rdmprotocol.org), providing a single dedicated place for Developers to go with their questions and discussion for RDM.
"Many times, the correct answer to a question while implementing software is the determination between success and failure", Blair points out. "This community provides a resource to get those key questions answered before releasing a product into the marketplace."
There are also specific forums for users who have questions about how RDM works.
While the site is not affiliated or operated by ESTA, it is monitored by many of the individuals involved in developing the RDM Protocol as a service to the industry.
It is anticipated that the site will grow to include many resources beyond just the discussion forums for those developing and interested in how RDM operates.

Microhire Expands Lighting Inventory to Meet Growing Demand
Microhire has, since its inception in 1987, continuously provided a level of service and assurance in the audio visual equipment hire and AV equipment rental industry. They are proud to consider themselves Australia's only true Computer & Audio Visual Rental Specialists.
Over the past few months the company had undergone a dramatic expansion through all of their offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Canberra and Adelaide. With this growing requirement for their services Microhire has expanded their lighting stock - initially with Martin MAC250s and then some MAC550s and MAC600s, Kupo par cans, TMB cabling, MA Lighting grandMA consoles and Studio Due CityColors. Added to that were LSC Lighting e24 Touring Systems dimmers.
"We are currently making the MA Lighting grandMA console the standard console for all our offices," said Craig Hiddle, Microhire's managing director. "I'm fully convinced by the performance and reliability of the grandMA consoles. The nice thing about the grandMA is you can make every layout unique to the user. We've found that the operators are enjoying the consoles as they can create a dynamic show with little or no experience with the console."
Craig is particularly enthusiastic about the Studio Due CityColors saying that get used on nearly every event and that they are the ideal colour wash unit for both indoors and outdoors.
"They're a fantastic light, we love them," he stated. "And as for the Martin MACs what can I say that hasn't been said a thousand times before: they're reliable, packed with features and don't cost a fortune!"

Osmonds bring in Mac 700s and grandMA

Osmond Electronics of Adelaide has been busy expanded its lighting department with the purchase of twelve Martin MAC700 moving heads and a MA Lighting grandMA console.
"Since purchasing the MAC700’s they have been in constant demand including for such high profile events as the Clipsal 500 after race concerts as well as the launch of the Clipsal 500, and the Police Tattoo," reported Justin Accatino, Osmond Electronics Lighting Hire Manager. "They’re soon to go out on Englebert Humpledinck."
Justin described the MAC700 as a great light with fantastic output and brightness. He also favours the zoom capabilities of the fixture.
"We’ve had the MAC700’s for a few months now and there’s not been one problem with them," he stated. "They make a welcome addition to our family of sixty other Martin MACs."
Justin is currently having fun finding out about the myriad of possibilities the grandMA console offers as Osmonds has just taken delivery of one.
"It’s so quick and easy to use, everything is there in front of you," he said. "To be honest I think that are still heaps of tricks to be discovered although it has been very simple to learn – much easier than other consoles I’ve had to learn." [Source: Show Technology media release]

Music Box take the plunge with Sharks!
A couple of months ago Sydney hire-company The Music Box took delivery of eight Studio Due Shark 250 moving heads and since then there has been nothing but praise for these very efficient and well priced fixtures. In fact Musicbox is the first Australian hire company to take the plunge with Sharks!
“We always like to purchase our lighting equipment from Show Technology due to the fantastic support they give us,” said Greg Leto, managing director of Music Box. “We already own Martin MAC moving heads but the Shark has added variety to our stock and a choice to our customers. For their price, the Shark’s offer good features and they do what we need them to do.”
Shan Soley, Music Box’s Production Manager and Lighting Designer, is more than impressed by the Shark’s having used them on a variety of events.
“The Sharks are great and extremely reliable,” he said. “There are obviously not as many features as a Martin MAC250 Entour but for the price you pay, you wouldn’t expect to. The colours are very vivid and the selection of eleven colours is quite good. The stock gobos supplied with the fixture are very usable and unique.
“I find the Shark easy to address, to assign and the built-in auto functions which we’ve used a few times, such as stand alone, are great. They really are very good value for money. They’re also so light you can rig them in many ways that isn’t possible with other moving heads. For example, we’ve put them on spigots and then placed them on stands rather than setting up truss. It’s an easy way to put a couple of lights up in the air and we love them for that!
The Shark 250 moving head is a high performance lighting tool for touring, corporate and theatre applications. It delivers an exceptional combination of great power and projection possibilities, nine rotating gobos, and fifteen dynamic colours. Additional features include remote ON/OFF and reset by DMX, automatic lamp re-strike, 16Bit and it has a weight of just 14 Kg.
The guys at Music Box have given the ultimate seal of approval to the Shark 250 by planning to purchase a further eight of these cost effective, feature packed moving head fixtures.

Pro Light & Sound expand Martin inventory

Melbourne-based production company Pro Light & Sound have well and truly ‘Martinised’ their hire department with the purchase of eight Martin MAC700, four more MAC250 Entours, four MiniMacs and twelve Mania effect lights.
“We now own twelve Martin Entours as they’re very popular; we find that they are as bright as most competitors 575W fixtures,” said Stavros. “They are also aesthetically designed so they’re good for corporate functions where they do not look out of place especially if they are at eye-level.”
Stavros purchased the MiniMacs for his clients who already have gobos designed for Martin MAC250 fixtures but occasionally find the MAC250 is not appropriate for certain productions.
”Sometimes they need something very small to project their gobo and we’ve found that the MiniMAC, with the same gobo size, is ideal,” he explained.
The MAC700 fixtures made their debut for Pro Light & Sound at the Mischief underground dance party held at an undisclosed Melbourne venue and featuring the international DJ Felix the House Cat. Well over 3,000 people attended the event and, according to Stavros, the organisers were very impressed by the production and, in particular, the MAC700.
“The things that you can do with the MAC700 are awesome,” he exclaimed. “Even after a twelve hour shift we still found that there were things that we still hadn’t got around to doing.”
“The combination of MAC700 and MAC250 Entours were used as we wanted to use the speed and effects of the Entours together with the pure grunt of the light output of the MAC700,” said Troy Brown, Pro Light & Sound’s LD. “Together with Martin Atomics I had plenty to play with to create a variety of effects throughout the 12 hour show. There wasn’t much I couldn’t do with them.”
The MAC700’s were also used at the Metro for Bollywood’s answer to Robbie Williams and Mariah Carrey in the form of the Rishi Rich Project (pictured), featuring world renowned musical producer on yeyboards - Rishi Rich. Singing to a sold out crowd they performed a highly entertaining two hour set to an ecstatic audience. Only four MAC700 were used to enhance the considerable lighting already in place at Metro.
“The MAC700’s proved their worth keeping up - if not surpassing the 1200 watt HPE Golden Scans for output and flexibility,” said Stavros. “We used the MACs mostly as stage wash and for effect and they were more than up to the task! The Wide angle “frost” feature and CMYK colour mixing was great for washing the stage – even at such a short distance. They have to be one of our best investments in recent years. We now have over 24 Martin MAC fixtures made up of a combination of MAC250 Entours and Mac700 Profiles.”
The Martin Mania’s have gone into the hire department to supplement the Martin MX-4’s which are still in demand and working well as are the Acrobats, a fixture that Stavros describes as one of the most popular weekend hires.
“The response to the Mania’s has been phenomenal,” he said. “We’ve been running a ‘Martin May Madness’ promotion whereby you can hire a Mania at a reduced rate so that people can try them out and the amount of interest has been amazing. They’re a phenomenon in themselves and they’ll get hired time and time again. People love that they’re different from anything else on the market.”

More information available on NSW Test & Tag changes
WorkCover NSW have now released some guidance on the changes to the OH&S Regulations regarding testing and tagging. For more information and links to newly released documents visit the ALIA On-Line Forums (url = http://www.alia.com.au/forums/viewtopic.php?t=401) |
Change of Testing and Tagging requirements for NSW
The NSW Minister for Commerce, John Della Bosca recently announced simplified safety regulations for electrical equipment in the workplace.
“The amended safety regulations are the result of WorkCover consultations with employers and union representatives,” said Mr Della Bosca.
“We have removed the ambiguities in the previous regulations to make compliance easier for employers, particularly small businesses,” said the Minister. “The OHS Amendment (Electrical Equipment) Regulation 2006 now specifically identifies areas where testing and tagging is required, such as construction sites and other hostile operating environments,” he said.
In the amended regulation, hostile operating environment means:
"an operating environment at a place of work where an electrical article is in its normal use subjected to operating conditions that are likely to result in damage to the article, and, for example, includes an operating environment that may:
(a) cause mechanical damage to the article, or
(b) expose the article to moisture, heat, vibration, corrosive substances or dust that is likely to result in damage to the article. “WorkCover recognises that in many work environments, certain electrical equipment does not warrant a rigorous inspection and testing procedure due to its inherent low level of risk,” said the Minister.
“The electric kettle, toaster, computers, photocopiers and similar electrical appliances commonly used in small business offices come into this category,” he said. “These items will still be subject to the normal risk assessment process, but the new regulation clarifies they are not required to undergo testing and tagging. “The new regulation targets the types of equipment and work situations which WorkCover requires to be tested and tagged to secure the health and safety of workers,” said the Minister.
Equipment that is on hire, or has been repaired, must also be inspected and tested regularly in accordance with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760:2001.

Martin Professional Moves into LED Lighting:
Announces Licensing Agreement with Color Kinetics
Martin Professional A/S has entered into a strategic agreement with Color Kinetics Incorporated whereby Martin will have access to Color Kinetics’ worldwide LED patent portfolio. The licensing agreement will allow Martin to expand its product portfolio with a range of multicolor LED-based lighting products developed to its own high quality and performance standards. It also allows the company to apply its years of market expertise and worldwide distribution reach to the market opportunity for LED lighting.
“This agreement marks an important relationship for Martin as we look to bring our first LED-based products to market this year and help drive adoption of this fast-emerging technology,” said Christian Engsted, President and CEO, Martin Professional. “We recognize that LEDs will prominently impact the global lighting market, and believe that leveraging Color Kinetics’ developed patent portfolio will strengthen our competitive position in this new and highly anticipated market direction for Martin.
“LED technology has experienced continual improvement over the years though we still expect to see a lot of evolution in the area. However, we feel that the quality and stability of the technology is now at a point where, in some of our segments, we are confident of offering a Martin product range. In addition, for certain higher end applications, we will now be able to offer the customer the choice of either an LED or a traditional light source solution, each with its own merits, and thereby give the customer an even broader product range to choose from.
“At Martin it is our mission to understand, inspire and enable our customers to develop attractive environments and create excitement through the use of dynamic light and visual effects. We always strive to be the obvious choice for the professional market and it is integral to our customer focus that we are application driven, offering a range of products that can provide a total solution. This will increasingly become a mixture of automated lighting, digital media and LED fixtures.”
Bill Sims, President and CEO of Color Kinetics, stated, “Martin Professional has long been an industry leader in entertainment lighting. This agreement underscores our strategy to create a universal foundation for intelligent LED lighting, in part by enabling third-party product development through licensing. We believe this will benefit the industry at large by enabling new market entrants that can further fuel adoption.”
Martin’s first LED products are scheduled for commercial release at the PLASA exhibition in London later this year.

Showtime chooses Martin Quality
Located in Petersham, Sydney, Showtime was established six years ago and since then the company has grown from strength to strength. They are involved in all types of production – corporate, dance parties, product launches, school events – in fact anything that requires sound and lighting.
“We’re big enough to do the entertainment centre and we’re small enough to service your local DJ,” sated Rob Runko, Showtime’s managing director.
Showtime offer sales, service and hire with a strong devotion to Show Technology and the Martin brand. They have an extremely high turn-around of Martin Mania and other effects ranges.
Showtime’s hire inventory includes many Martin effects as well as MiniMACs and last month it expanded even further with the addition of eight Martin MAC250 Entours. W hile Rob understands that there are many inexpensive 250W moving heads on the market he chose Martin because of the quality, reliability, market acceptance and eventually, resale value
In fact Rob is so pleased with the Entours plans are under way to increase the number to sixteen by the end of the year.
“Martin has a very good brand name and are known for their reliable products,” said Rob. “The Entours are a great all-rounder, they’re very versatile and I guess they really are the industry standard. W e simply cannot afford to have equipment underperforming on jobs, our reputation is at stake!"

Graftons opt for Martin MACs
Grafton's has been synonymous with sound and lighting in Sydney for the past nineteen years. From the company's humble beginnings in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst as a supplier to local and touring rock and roll acts, along with corporate productions and events, the company expanded to become one of Sydney's most prominent live production and equipment sales companies.
However, over the past few months there have been many changes at Graftons including Andy McIntyre taking over the helm of the company. Under his management, the company continues to grow particularly in the corporate market including event management. They have also increased their share of the installation market.
The decision was made to upgrade the lighting hire stock including the addition of a large range of intelligent lighting. For Andy there was no other choice than the Martin MAC and his initial purchase of four Martin MAC250 Entour fixtures is just the start of his planned MAC family.
“Martin is a renowned brand and they always produce excellent fixtures,” he declared. “You hardly ever have any problems with Martin lights. The Entour is a great fixture - it’s quiet, which is great for corporate gigs, and it has great optics.”
Graftons already own a large number of Martin effects lighting particularly the Martin Mania series. They also drive retail sales of the mania range exceptionally well.
“The Mania’s work really well for us both in dry hire and for gigs,” said Andy. “The water effects are very popular.”

PLASA Awards: Rewarding Innovation in 2006
PLASA announces the launch of the 2006 PLASA Awards for Innovation; entries are invited now with the awards to be presented during the 2006 PLASA Show.
PLASA, the UK’s Professional Lighting and Sound Association, has announced the launch of the 2006 PLASA Awards for Innovation. Designed to reflect excellence in new products in the fields represented by PLASA - lighting, sound, engineering, AV and staging for the entertainment industry - the awards were established in 1992 and have been presented annually since then at the PLASA Show in London each autumn - this year running from 10-13 September at Earls Court.
Open to PLASA Show exhibitors with a new product at the Show, entry into the awards brings immediate benefits with nominated products showcased in an Innovation Gallery inside the entrance to the show. Products are then judged on the show floor by a panel of experienced industry practitioners, with the eight winners announced at an Awards Ceremony at 6pm in the Central Bar on the Show’s second day – Monday 11 September.
The PLASA Awards for Innovation have a justly deserved reputation for identifying high quality, innovative new products early in their life. Previous winners, many now firmly established in their fields, include MA Lighting’s grandMA lighting console, now in use on countless productions around the world; Wireless Solution’s W-DMX wireless data transceiver, recently used on the Nobel Prize Awards; Element Labs VersaTile, for which recent projects have included the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and concerts for Maximo Park; Stage Technologies’ Visual Creator system for creating 3D flight paths using multiple hoists, currently in use on Cirque du Soleil’s KA in Las Vegas and Mary Poppins in London; the DiGiCo D5 digital mixing console, firmly established as a leader in the digital console market; High End’s Catalyst, which started the trend for digital media servers controlled from lighting consoles; Martin’s incredibly popular MAC2000 moving spotlight, and Total Fabrication’s safety-led T2 trussing system.
Proof that it is not always the ‘big budget’ products that win prizes comes in the awards presented to Doughty for the Overlocker clamp, and to Le Mark for the simple but useful Blacktak adhesive masking product.
Manufacturers who have received PLASA Awards for Innovation speak openly of their value. According to Ralph-Jörg Wezorke, managing director of MA Lighting International: “The difference between the PLASA Awards and other awards is that the PLASA jury looks more to the technical value of new solutions and their future outlook. We were just beginning with our grandMA console when we received the PLASA award; it provided enormous motivation to continue. Now we can pay back the trust we received from the PLASA jury in 1999.”
Wayne Howell, managing director of Artistic Licence, notes that the awards are “good for staff morale - a confirmation that all their hard work is valued outside of the company. They are also valuable to the prestige and credibility of the company; I believe a customer is more likely to choose a product from a company that has won PLASA Awards.”
“The PLASA Awards for Innovation reward excellence in new products,” comments PLASA’s CEO, Matthew Griffiths. “We also intend them to reflect the increasing trend towards environmentally friendly developments, recognising those who divert an element of their R&D budget into benefiting the environment with the award for Environmental Impact re-introduced last year.”
PLASA Show Director Madeleine Marston adds: ”The PLASA Awards’ past record at successfully spotting innovative new products speaks for itself; we look forward to seeing what exciting new developments this year’s Awards will unearth.”
Manufacturers wishing to nominate up to three products for the 2006 PLASA Awards for Innovation may do so from now until the deadline for entries Friday 11 August 2006. The majority of the entry fee for each nomination is donated to charities and other good causes - in 2005 over £10,000 was raised and presented to the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Live Music Forum and the Elizabeth Foundation.
Further information about the 2006 PLASA Awards for Innovation and their entry requirements, together with details of the 2006 PLASA Show, can be found at the PLASA Show website or by contacting +44 (1323) 410335.
